MAKE YOUR SMALL SPACES SEEM LARGER
Have a spare area of your home that isn’t that roomy? Maybe you have an apartment that isn’t as spacious as you want. If you’re searching for ways to make that small space appear larger, try out some of these great tips!
LIGHTEN UP THE PAINT
Even if you like dark colors from a design aspect, dark paint can actually make a room look smaller. If you want to “open up” the room, so to speak, try using colors such as cream, pale gray, light blues and white.
MIRRORS ARE YOUR FRIENDS
The quickest way to make a room bigger is to use mirrors. You may not want a wall-to-wall mirror per se, but if you lean a full-length one against a wall and create a statement area, the room will appear larger!
STICK WITH ONE COLOR
While colors are beautiful in a home and many compliment each other perfectly, too many colors may contribute to the smaller look of a room. Using the color suggestions from earlier, perhaps you can try painting the room different shades of just one of those colors. A white wall with pale gray trim can make for an open, airy, French-inspired living area.
USE MULTIPURPOSE PIECES
You know that DVD rack you have beside the entertainment center? Perhaps that space could be better used on something else, like a storage ottoman that doubles as extra seating. You can even try console tables with drawers for any clutter that could accrue.
MAKE YOUR CEILING POP
When talking about keeping rooms light, we weren’t talking about the ceiling. The ceiling has its own set of suggestions. Instead of a neutral-colored ceiling, make it your accent area. Darker colors help create depth in the ceiling. Using the right decorations helps too, if you make them draw the eye upward. That can make the ceilings appear higher than they are.
COLOR CODE YOUR POSSESSIONS
This goes for clothes, books, movies, anything you have in your living quarters. Color coding items creates a more structured, organized look. You can even try using other organization methods with this too, such as arranging items by height.
CONSIDER YOUR WINDOW COVERINGS
Some of us prefer to be more private than other, while others prefer rooms to feel more open and airy. One way to make a room feel bigger is to consider your window coverings. If you’re more of a private person, try to add draperies that are similar to the wall in color to avoid contrast to the space. If you’re more of the open-area type of person, perhaps you can try ditching those draperies altogether!
BE MINDFUL OF SPACE
Those shelves you have don’t have to hold all of your items. Instead of filing up all of your shelves, leave some of them half-empty. This helps create a sense of openness, and thus can make the room seem bigger.
